Kings and
emperors could not stop it. War and revolution could not destroy
it. Retrace the historic path of God’s Word from
Mt. Sinai to Plymouth Rock. We meet the scholars, teachers and
missionaries whose passionate faith preserved The Indestructible
Book. |

The story of The Indestructible Book begins
with the Ten Commandments, God’s first communication to man. Bible
historian Ken Connolly describes that first awesome encounter and
the later dedicated efforts of scribes as they meticulously copy
Old Testament passages. |

|
New Testament scribes are persecuted and martyred by
the Romans until protection is granted by Constantine. Jerome’s
Latin translation makes the Bible available to all of the Roman
Empire until the Dark Ages. When Latin as a common language fades,
a few monks preserve the Word. |

Centuries later, St. Patrick and St. Columbia evangelize in English,
and John Wycliffe translates the entire Bible into English. A
controversial figure to the end, Oxford scholar and priest Wycliffe
dies while preaching in his church. Believers in England and on the
Continent are being burned at the stake for spreading his message and
beliefs. But the Word is in the world to stay, and no campaign — no
matter how brutal — can stop it. |

As
the Renaissance blossoms, Christianity faces a period of great trial
and sacrifice. Bible scholar and host Ken Connolly shows that at a
time when learning and the arts are flourishing, The
Indestructible Book is harshly suppressed by the English
court. Owning a Bible in English, or even quoting Scripture in
English, means death for countless men and women of God. |

A young scholar, William Tyndale, becomes a convert and
a driving force in the Reformation. The Reformation finally gains a
foothold in England, and numerous English translations of the Bible
appear. This, however, is merely a prelude to a historic crisis for
The Indestructible Book. Queen Mary, known as “Bloody
Mary,” ascends the throne determined the crush the Reformation.
Hundreds of reformers are burned at the stake. |

A small group of Christians, know as the Puritans, is
persecuted and leaves Holland to seek sanctuary from the religious
intolerance of the Church of England. Though they are welcomed in
Holland, the opportunity to be “self-governed” in a brand new land is
decided upon. The group sails to America for the freedom to worship
God as they please. |
